Managing Stress and Fear in Your Puppy
Puppies communicate through many stress signals like trembling, avoidance, pacing, whining, and barking. Watch for physical signs such as lip-licking, yawning, panting, a tucked tail, whale eye, or growling. It is important to distinguish these from being tired; a stressed puppy yawns or licks their lips even when they haven’t been active.
When you notice these signs, respect the puppy’s boundaries by giving them space and time. Remove them from the situation immediately and move them to a calm environment. Do not cuddle or hold them during this time, as that does not help build a confident puppy. Instead, remain calm and neutral.
Once in a safe space, use play and distraction to move forward. If the puppy has an unrealistic fear, stay positive and confident. Coax them to investigate without forcing them. Reward even a single step toward the object with treats and praise using words like yes or good puppy. Desensitize them over the next few days with gradual exposure to build their confidence.
