Can a blue dog carry the black mask trait?
Yes, genetically, a blue Great Dane can carry the dominant trait for a black mask.
However, you will not actually see a distinct black mask on a blue Great Dane because it is camouflaged by the coat. The masking trait is only visibly noticeable on lighter base coats, such as fawn or brindle. On dogs with solid black, blue, merle, or harlequin coats, the mask is essentially hidden because it blends into the overall dark coloring or spotting patterns.
Additionally, because a blue Great Dane has inherited two copies of the recessive dilute gene, all of the black pigment on its body is lightened to blue. This dilution also affects the mask, meaning the genetic “black” mask is actually diluted into a blue mask.
Therefore, while a blue Great Dane can carry the mask gene and pass it on to its offspring, the mask remains visually hidden on the dog itself.
