How much exercise should a growing giant breed puppy get?
Until a giant breed puppy’s growth plates fully close—which typically occurs between 11 and 12 months of age—you should avoid strenuous physical exercise. During this rapid growth phase, their immature skeletal system is highly susceptible to physical damage and orthopedic diseases.
Instead of forced or strenuous activities, puppies should be allowed free exercise. This allows them to move, play, and rest at their own pace. Allowing free exercise is also a mandatory component of addressing developmental issues such as severe knuckling over.
Furthermore, you must carefully schedule your puppy’s activities around their mealtimes to prevent canine bloat (Gastric Dilatation-Volvulus), a sudden, life-threatening condition that giant breeds are particularly prone to. To reduce this risk, avoid heavy playtime, long runs, or strenuous exercise for at least 1 hour before and 1 hour after meals.
