How to Practice Pack Leadership Every Day
Being a leader is a lifestyle practiced through every interaction. These daily exercises reinforce the bond of trust and show your dog you are providing the structure they need.
Mastering the Walk
The walk is the most powerful tool for leadership. A leader leads the way. Your dog should walk beside or behind you on a loose leash. By deciding the direction and pace, you show the dog you are in control of the journey and their safety.
Claiming Your Space
Dogs communicate by claiming space. If your dog blocks your path or jumps into your lap without an invitation, they are claiming you. Practice claiming your bubble by moving through your house with confidence. If a dog is in your way, expect them to move for you. This is a quiet way to show you own the territory.
Control the Resources
In a natural pack, the leader controls resources. Have your dog wait in a calm, seated state before you put their food bowl down. They should not eat until you give a release command. This teaches them that all good things come from you when they are in a respectful state of mind.
Thresholds (Doors and Gates)
Have your dog wait for you to cross the threshold first. This reinforces that you are the one exploring new territory first and ensuring it is safe before they enter.
Calmness as a Requirement
Never reward excitement. If your dog is spinning or jumping when you arrive, ignore them. Wait until they have four paws on the floor and a quiet mind before offering touch or praise. This teaches them that calm is the only way to get what they want.
