Reducing Mental Clutter for Your Dogs
In the breeding world, it is vital to reduce the mental clutter of gossip and negativity. I have learned that I must clear my mind before I ever step foot in the kennel because my dogs pick up on exactly what I am feeling.
This is something that works for everyone. Our lives are so full of stress, chaos, worries, and anxiety. We need to remember to let all of that go before we work with our dogs. They are at the other end of that leash, and they pick up on every bit of energy we put out. When I remove that noise and focus on my purpose, my dogs stay calm and happy. A clear head is the best tool any breeder or dog owner can have.
Psychiatric service dogs take this connection even further. They are trained to alert their owners to rising anxiety levels and can even let you know when you are about to have a panic attack. By sensing changes like a rising heart rate or shallow breathing, they give you the warning you need to find a safe space or start grounding yourself before the attack fully hits.
This connection is especially critical for those living with PTSD, whether it comes from the weight of military service or from other traumas like abuse. For them, these dogs are a lifeline. They don’t just provide comfort; they are trained to recognize the early signs of a flashback or a night terror, stepping in to ground their owner and bring them back to the present. Whether it is a veteran or someone healing from past trauma, these dogs prove that a clear, focused bond can quite literally save a life.
