Brain Games and Getting Your Puppy’s Attention
A smart puppy needs to stay busy! Keeping your Great Dane’s mind engaged is just as important as physical exercise. If they don’t have a job to do, they will find one—and you might not like the one they pick!
Communication and Recall
I have already started teaching your puppy that certain sounds and words mean something exciting is about to happen. You should continue this at home using a high-pitched, happy voice to keep them motivated.
• Meal Time: When I feed the puppies, I bang on the pan with a spoon and call out, “Puppy, puppy, puppy! Dinner, dinner, dinner!” This builds a strong association between that call and something they love.
• Potty Time: When it’s time to head out to the designated spot, I use that same excited voice: “Puppy, puppy, puppy! Outside! Potty time, potty time!”
• Follow Me: Using “Puppy, puppy, puppy!” in an upbeat tone is the best way to get them to follow you anywhere. It makes being with you a fun game they want to win.
Mental Stimulation and Brain Games
Mental exercise can tire a puppy out just as much as a walk. Here are some great ways to keep their brains working:
• Snuffle Mats and Lick Mats: These encourage them to use their nose and tongue, which is very calming and mentally taxing.
• Puzzles: Use interactive toys where they have to move pieces to find hidden treats.
• Tug Poles (Flirt Poles): These are excellent for burning off energy and practicing focus and self-control.
By engaging their brains every day, you are raising a dog that is much more calm and attentive to you.
