The Apollo of Dogs

There is a reason the Great Dane has earned the nickname “The Apollo of Dogs.” Named after the Greek god of the sun, music, and truth, this breed perfectly balances immense power with a refined, graceful elegance. While their history as fierce boar hunters dates back centuries, today they are better known as the gentle giants of the dog world.
A History of Strength and Grace

The title “Apollo of Dogs” was given to the Great Dane because of its impressive stature and majestic appearance. In ancient times, these dogs were not the lap dogs we know today. They were originally bred as powerful boar hounds in Germany, where they needed incredible speed, strength, and courage to hunt. Over the centuries, they transitioned from those heavy-duty hunters into the graceful, loyal companions that guard our homes and hearts today.
Danes in the Spotlight

Because of their giant size and even bigger personalities, Great Danes have always been stars. Many people first fell in love with the breed through the Pinkerton books, which perfectly capture what it’s like to live with a dog that doesn’t know its own size. You might also remember the chaos of Marmaduke or the hilarious identity crisis in The Ugly Dachshund. And, of course, the most famous Great Dane of all is Scooby-Doo, who showed the world that even a 150-pound dog can be a total fraidy-cat. These characters captured the breed’s goofy side—proving that while they look like statues, they are often just big, lovable clowns.

Modern Stars and Famous Owners

The Great Dane’s star power hasn’t faded. Most recently, the movie “The Friend” (2025) showed the world the deep emotional bond we share with these dogs, featuring a striking Harlequin named Apollo. But it isn’t just movies—plenty of famous faces have fallen for the breed too.

• Vanessa Williams has owned several Danes.
• Kyle Chandler (from Friday Night Lights) grew up with them because his mom was a famous breeder and judge.
• Jim Carrey and Fabio have also been proud owners.
• Even historical figures like Franklin D. Roosevelt and William Penn (the founder of Pennsylvania) owned one—which is why the Great Dane is the official state dog of Pennsylvania!
